Michael Quigley has officially been named president and COO of Alcatel.
Quigley graduates to the post from his position as head of the company's
fixed line and North American operations.
Quigley fills a spot vacated by Philippe Germond, who resigned earlier this month.
Although Alcatel did not provide a reason for Germond's departure, media reports have speculated Germond did not agree with chief executive Serge Tchuruk's strategy for the company.
"Mike has gained wide recognition in the world of telecoms and has acquired a broad knowledge of our company. I will give him all the support he may need in his new position," said Tchuruk in a prepared statement.
Quigley joined Alcatel in 1971 in Australia. He relocated to the United States in 1999 to join Alcatel USA as COO and was subsequently promoted to president of Alcatel North America.
