While driving, distracted mobile phone users will soon get an extra level of safety.
Japanese car manufacturer Nissan is currently testing an ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) that
will warn drivers of nearby pedestrians.
Nissan's new technology will utilize modern GPS receivers mounted in the car, in conjunction with the use
of cell phones.
In a real-world situation, the location of both the mobile phone and the car itself would be transmitted
to the ITS, which in turn would then determine where the pedestrian is in relation to the car.
The technology can even tell how fast they are moving and in which direction they are traveling.
The car driver would then be alerted either by an audible warning on his cell phone, or a display on the
dashboard if an accident would appear imminent.
Nissan is developing its new ITS technology in collaboration with Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo.
