Yesterday the Federal Communications Commission was scheduled to take the first step in defining
how its auction of the 700 MHz wireless band will work.
At an open meeting of its commissioners, the FCC simply hopes to provide a set of new rules on how the
spectrum will be divided.
It also wants to determine what kind of services can be offered using the airwaves.
While consumer groups are advocating for an open auction that will increase competition among providers,
many other proposals have come across the FCC’s desk.
Other groups, including companies that could benefit from the capturing swaths of the spectrum, have also
offered the FCC proposals.
A portion of one of the latest, from startup Frontline, is expected to be put out for public comment by
the FCC.
The FCC’s delay in outlining auction plans makes it difficult for companies hoping to buy in on a piece
of the action.
