On March 28, Kyocera said it plans to completely stop using batteries from NEC Tokin in its mobile phones
after several NEC Tokin batteries either exploded or caught on fire.
Together, Kyocera and Japanese wireless carrier KDDI have both recalled over 214,000 potentially defective
phone handsets after thirteen users reported minor fires or burns from their handset’s batteries.
Additionally, Kyocera added that three more people were reportedly injured from the fires or explosions.
The two companies also said they plan to replace the volatile batteries with “stronger and safer” NEC Tokin
batteries.
Kyocera also said it plans to use batteries from other and 'safer' suppliers in the near future.
