Yesterday, company CEO Wang Jianzhou said that China Mobile Communications is changing its policies to be
more like Western wireless operators.
China Mobile Communications is also breaking with its past policy of requiring majority control in acquisitions.
Jianzhou also added that the wireless operator hopes to negotiate with Apple to sell the iPhone, although there aren't
any current discussions.
China Mobile, which in 2007 acquired Paktel Communications for $460 million, will now focus on emerging markets
as it looks for new acquisitions, Jianzhou said.
Potential targets could be Telekom Malaysia or a stake in Singapore Telecom, various industry observers said.
Another wireless operator, China Unicom, agreed to buy up to $140 million worth of Ericsson hardware for ten
different regions including Beijing, where Ericcson wasn't previously involved.
That deal also includes multimedia WAP services, officials told Wireless Industry News.
Separately, China Mobile Communications announced a $1.3 billion purchase of Ericsson’s GSM network equipment,
technical support and various related services.
This will affect about nineteen regions in China. Ericsson also will provide unspecified power-saving technology
it said.
