Apr. 2, 2009

Late yesterday, Samsung has unveiled its first Wi-MAX device and updates to its TouchWiz platform ahead of the opening of CTIA Las Vegas 2009.

Underscoring consumer choice and a renewed focus on media rich touchscreen devices, Samsung unveiled its new smartphone, dubbed the Samsung Mondi.

Previously, the TouchWiz was equipped with e-mail, calendar and media support, but now includes one-touch access to Web applications.

Omar Khan, senior v.p. of strategy and communications for Samsung, cited partner relationships with Yahoo, Google and AccuWeather.

The Mondi runs on Windows Mobile v. 6.1 and comes preloaded with Opera 9.5. It also sports a 4.3” LCD touchscreen, full slide-out Qwerty keyboard and full WiMAX capability.

The new device also comes equipped with an updated version of Samsung’s TouchWiz functionality.

Additionally, Samsung did showcase a revamp of its popular Samsung Instinct. The new model, the Instinct S-30, will include expandable memory of 32 Gb and will come preloaded with Calendar Sync and instant messaging features.

But the new Samsung Instinct won't come preloaded with TouchWiz as the user interface was developed in cooperation with Sprint Nextel.

Khan added some details and said that the storefront will be available around April 27.

Beyond wireless devices, Samsung also announced its release of a SDK (software development kit) in preparation for the forthcoming opening of its mobile applications storefront.

Samsung said that the new app store will also allow a simplified widget development functionality for the mobile consumer.
