There is a rumor that is circulating in some circles about an impending Android device from Samsung.
The Czech technology site DNES yesterday released some startling specs for the Samsung 8000, which it
says could be released soon under the name the Samsung Cubic.
During CTIA Wireless 2009 a few weeks ago, and at a press conference for the release of the WiMAX-capable
Samsung Mondi, Samsung executives declined to comment with any details on any future Android devices coming
from the Korean company.
But they did say that Samsung would be releasing Android devices in the near future...
The "Cubic" reportedly would include a 3.1 inch display and VGA with 16 million colors. The report
says the new mobile handset would come equipped with a 5 mega pixel camera with flash, FM radio and 2 Gb
internal memory with an expandable Micro-SD slot.
It also would come enabled with Wi-Fi, GPS capability with A-GPS and Bluetooth 2.1.
Director of research for Yankee Group Andy Castonguay was cautious about commenting on the rumor. He was
equally cautious about the Android platform itself, stressing a future where wireless carriers would be more
willing to team with mobile handset manufacturers that offer a successful apps store.
The new phone has a chance at bumping up features already included on the Android G1 and could maybe even raise
the bar for smartphones in general. Time will tell. Remember that this is just a rumor...
Castonguay added “openness is a really interesting ideal, but when it comes down to brass tacks it creates certain
conflicts. For example, if you’re Samsung and you’re putting out some Android mobile phones, how much are you
going to invest in doing co-marketing for a larger Android apps store?”
"In the near future, wireless carriers are going to select handset and operating systems for their portfolios
that feature successful apps stores that produce unique content to drive even more sales. That's really
where the market wants to go I think," added Castonguay.
