According to preliminary sales numbers from a report published by Strategy Analytics, Research In Motion's
(RIM) BlackBerry sales claim to have 10 percent of the average U.S. cell phone market share in the second quarter.
The research company said the BlackBerry was able to reach this milestone in a rough economic quarter when
total mobile phone shipments increased by about 5.3 percent to 41.9 million units in the second quarter from
39.8 million for the same quarter in 2007.
Meanwhile, mobile handset maker Motorola managed to hold on to its No. 3 position with a 25 percent market
share in Q2 by fighting off LG Electronics.
Although RIM represents no immediate threat to No. 1 device maker Nokia, which holds more than a 40 percent
market share, nevertheless, it is still creeping its way up the market share ladder, slowly but surely.
