Useful Networks has acquired Canadian-based KnowledgeWhere, a company with expertise in location-aware
software, social networking and various lifestyle applications.
KnowledgeWhere has nine employees, increasing Useful Networks’ total staff of 39.
Useful Networks is a subsidiary of Liberty Media, which also oversees True Position on the wireless E-911
side of technology.
Useful Networks’ applications include "Sniff", a social network integrated friend finder, a permission-based
application that lets consumers locate friends in real-time with their mobile phone or from social networks
such as Facebook.
The cross-carrier service was released in Scandinavia in November of last year and in the United Kingdom in
May of this year, with a U.S. launch date expected some time later in 2008.
Useful Networks is based in Denver. The KnowledgeWhere staff will keep its offices in Calgary, Alberta.
KnowledgeWhere is an aggregator for location-based services for wireless carriers, and it will be releasing
the API for "Sniff" soon so that mobile apps developers can write applications based on it.
