Useful Networks has acquired Canadian-based KnowledgeWhere, a company with expertise in location-aware software, social networking and various lifestyle applications.

KnowledgeWhere has nine employees, increasing Useful Networks’ total staff of 39.

Useful Networks is a subsidiary of Liberty Media, which also oversees True Position on the wireless E-911 side of technology.

Useful Networks’ applications include "Sniff", a social network integrated friend finder, a permission-based application that lets consumers locate friends in real-time with their mobile phone or from social networks such as Facebook.

The cross-carrier service was released in Scandinavia in November of last year and in the United Kingdom in May of this year, with a U.S. launch date expected some time later in 2008.

Useful Networks is based in Denver. The KnowledgeWhere staff will keep its offices in Calgary, Alberta.

KnowledgeWhere is an aggregator for location-based services for wireless carriers, and it will be releasing the API for "Sniff" soon so that mobile apps developers can write applications based on it.
