Wireless network operator Star-Cell is now deploying GSM base stations and satellite antennas in Cambodia
using solar power, its networking partner Ericsson announced.
The approach uses about fifty percent less energy as standard base stations do, the companies said.
Star-Cell marketing officer Denis Ryabtsev said "it enables us to expand into rural areas at a much lower
cost, connect people for the first time and offer affordable wireless services that improve the quality of life.”
For its part, Ericsson noted that the hybrid base station and satellite antenna approach is only the latest
in its mobile low-power research.
Ericsson developed biofuel sites, has technology for moving network features into power standby-by modes,
worked on a hybrid diesel and battery system and worked with Sony for related solar technology.
Backup power and alternative power are hot issues right now in the wireless communications industry,
as evidenced by the FCC putting more and more pressure on wireless carriers and providers.
