According to various reports, there were 95.4 billion inter-carrier text messages delivered in the first
six months of this year, establishing a new record for text messaging activity during the period.
It is also reported that a single-day record of 648 million texts were sent, and a one-hour record of 42
million messages were also accomplished, according to VeriSign.
Overall text messaging utilization is expected to increase in the near future as the application continues
to gain mass-market adoption in North America and some emerging markets.
However, according to a recent study from TNS Technology, mobile instant messaging eventually will
cannibalize SMS and computer-based e-mail, as users eschew messaging fees in favor of "all-you-can-eat"
unlimited data sending packages.
There were more than 52 billion text messages delivered during the second quarter of this year, up more than
20 percent from the previous quarter.
This is the equivalent of a daily average of 572 million text messages, more than doubling the 230
million per day during the second quarter of last year.
