Late yesterday, Sprint Nextel announced content and technology partners for location services in its
Xohm mobile Wi-MAX network.
Sprint's new broadband network, pronounced “Zome”, will open for business in Baltimore in September,
gradually expanding to other markets such as Washington and Chicago, Sprint officials said.
XOHM is the brand name Sprint Nextel is using to promote its 4G Wi-MAX services. Sprint is the first wireless
service provider in the U.S. to announce building a mobile WiMAX network. The XOHM Wi-MAX mobile Internet
initiative won the Best of WiMAX World 2007 Award for Industry Innovation.
Upon launching, a Xohm portal site will include friend-finding software from u-Locate Communications.
Business reviews from Yelp will also be included, as well as events listings from Eventful, news from Topix,
traffic updates from Navteq and weather forecasts from AccuWeather.
Google will provide search and mapping services for Sprint's new Xohm network.
Underlying technology will come from Openwave Systems and Autodesk, Sprint said.
The wireless operator also said it will publish Web services application
programming interfaces for third-party developers and that consumers will get a Xohm privacy policy.
Sprint's new Xohm technology development facilities will also be shared with Clearwire, Sprint officials said.
