Today the Limo Foundation (Linux Mobile) is making some waves with new mobile handsets and by also adding a new member to its ranks.

LiMo today said in a press release that the Japanese wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo would be getting a total of ten new LiMo devices from the likes of foundation members NEC and Panasonic.

According to the press release, the new handsets include advanced features not previously seen on Limo devices.

With this latest release, the total number of LiMo-compliant handsets rises to forty-two units.

“The successful launch of these latest phones further establishes the LiMo Platform as a leading device platform within today’s rapidly evolving mobile ecosystem,” said Kiyohito Nagata of NTT DoCoMo, chairperson of The LiMo Foundation.

At the same time, Immersion Corporation, licensor of touch feedback technology, announced that it has joined the LiMo Foundation. Immersion's TouchSense technology is now available to LiMo platform developers for designing touch screen devices.

Immersion's TouchSense API will be made available to the LiMo platform and is free for wireless industry development efforts.

LiMo handset device manufacturers may separately license Immersion's player to deliver effects if they wish.

So far, LG, Samsung and Nokia have all incorporated Immersion's haptics technology. To this date, the company boasts more than 70 million handsets shipped with Immersion's haptics technology.

Overall, the LiMo platform appears to be gaining some momentum in the mobile and wireless industry. It is now competing against the likes of Google's Android OS, Apple's iPhone, the BlackBerry, the Palm Pre and even Windows' Mobile CE.

It will be revealing to see how things develop in this segment in the next three to six months.

At the same time, there's no question that this segment of the market is advancing at a very fast pace.
