Sometime in the middle of next year, Bluetooth version 2.2 is expected as a new specification.

IMS Research says that Bluetooth 2.2 will be available in versions for Wi-Fi and ultrawideband (UWB) antennas.

The Wi-Fi version will be marketed at Bluetooth 10x while the UWB version will be called Bluetooth 100x.

Faster overall speeds will enable wireless applications such as video streaming and mobile printing, IMS analyst Chris Schreck wrote.

The 10x version will appear first since today's Wi-Fi devices are already popular, although both versions should be common as we reach 2012 or before, Schreck said.

Overall, industry analysts say Bluetooth 2.2 holds a lot of promise and they predict that this will further expand the development of new mobile applications and of wireless devices used by consumers as well as businesses globally.

A representative for the Bluetooth Special Interest Group wasn't available for comment late Friday afternoon.
