According to a new report from Juniper Research, on average, so-called mobile coupons are expected to reach or
slightly surpass 200 million redemptions globally in five years from now.
Overall, and to this date, the mobile coupon market is mostly mature in Japan and Korea.
However, the U.S. and Europe are showing some signs of growth as well across all the major retail sectors.
Juniper says that this includes restaurants, the entertainment segment, major shopping centers and food stores.
In less than five years from now, it is expected that the Far East, North America and Western Europe will
account for about 70 to 80 percent of the mobile coupon market.
However, Juniper warns that a lack of suitable point of sale infrastructure could hinder the market is some way,
and offers some recommendations in its report.
Howard Wilcox, the author of the report says “the overwhelming majority of mobile coupons are paper-based, but
the wireless phone is still the ultimate individual marketing device.
Wilcox added that "mobile coupon pilot programs show greatly increased redemption rates, often in the double
digit percentages.”
It will be interesting to see if this trend continues to grow, or if it will taper off sometime
next year. Some industry analysts expect mobile coupons to continue to grow well past 2013.
As can be expected, mobile marketers are watching this trend closely, in an effort to maximize
their sales and to increase their market share in this highly competitive market.
