Sprint Nextel is launching the first in a series of new mobile application development tools.
The wireless operator reiterated its support but did not actually announce a phone as of yet for Google’s
Open Handset Alliance and its Android operating system.
As part of the existing Sprint Titan suite, the company's new development tools are aimed at Windows Mobile
smartphones.
They can be combined with established desktop application tools so that developers have a reduced learning
curve, Sprint officials said.
Java aspects such as the CDC/Foundation Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and OSGi framework are also supported,
along with the Eclipse embedded rich client model and Eclipse IDE plug-ins.
Sprint’s developer conference begins today and lasts until Friday.
Sprint CEO Dan Hesse is scheduled to speak Thursday, while Google Android chief Rich Miner is expected for
Friday.
Miner isn't expected to make any significant announcements, although there are some that are expecting
him to do so.
Sprint wireless phone developers this week will also check out recent updates for Sprint's new phone, the
Instinct.
