Dec. 13, 2008

Walmart said it won't sell the Apple iPhone until Dec. 28.

Training at Walmart is happening this week and next, and phone activations will be required in the stores only.

However, there probably won’t be a discount price in most cases, a Walmart spokesperson said.

The post-Christmas date is just two weeks later than what employees said earlier this week.

Walmart's reason for the delay is not known. Selling the iPhone in Walmart stores marks a new era of mass-market acceptance for smartphones in general.

Originally, the iPhone was only available in Apple and AT&T stores, later expanding to BestBuy.

Apple hasn't commented yet the Walmart story, but did announce an iPhone gift card yesterday. The card itself isn’t very different from a generic Apple store card, other than its logo.

However, customers can go online using the card’s number to schedule a personal shopping and configuration session.
