Dec. 21, 2008

RIM (Research In Motion) earned a little less than $399 million on revenue of almost $2.8 billion for its third quarter.

RIM’s income was down from $495.5 million in the second quarter, yet an increase from $370.5 million when compared to 2007's numbers.

The maker of BlackBerry smartphones' revenue increased from $2.58 billion in the second quarter and $1.67 billion in 2007.

RIM shipped 6.7 million units in the third quarter, which was a bit more than it 80.8 percent of its total income. There were roughly 2.6 million new BlackBerry subscriber accounts, making the current total 21 million accounts.

CEO Jim Balsillie said "we are pleased to report record revenue results for the third quarter, and we have entered the fourth quarter with strong momentum despite the challenging general economic conditions. In fact, we have enjoyed our best ever start to the holiday buying season over the past few weeks."

RIM launched the Bold and Pearl Flip phones in the quarter, plus content partnerships with a variety of brand names such as AOL, Microsoft, MySpace and TiVo.

RIM’s news included the launch of the touchscreen Storm, which began with strong sales despite a Verizon Wireless network glitch and lukewarm reviews.

Verizon is currently selling RIM's new Storm handset through its website and is slowly putting inventory back into stores, although many stores won’t have it in time for Christmas.
