The GSM Association said it has started interoperability trials for video services in Europe, Asia and the United States that would allow wireless users to share live video clips across networks.

The trials include more than twenty mobile operators and subsidiaries.

They are: China Mobile, Cingular Wireless L.L.C., Hutchison Telecom, Orange, SK Telecom, Telefonica Moviles and Vodafone Group plc; and a dozen vendors, including Alcatel Corp., L.M. Ericcson, Intel Corp., Lucent Technologies Inc., Motorola Inc., Nokia Corp., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Siemens AG.

Nordic operator TeliaSonera is leading the initiative, and the trials are expected to be completed in the first half.

According to the GSMA, the video-share service allows a voice caller to send live video to whomever they are speaking with.

The tests use IP Multimedia Subsystem technology to permit the sharing of video clips across both fixed and mobile networks.

“We saw how interoperability contributed to the text messaging boom in the United States and expect it will do the same for video services,” said Kris Rinne, chief technology officer for Cingular.

The carrier recently launched its 3G network in 16 cities across the United States.
