Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo said it hopes to expand its streaming video
offerings through a new deal with Internet company RealNetworks Inc.
DoCoMo said it has signed a tentative agreement to install RealNetworks’
Helix Mobile servers.
The servers are designed to give content providers the chance
to use RealNetworks’ technology to offer video downloads to DoCoMo’s subscribers.
DoCoMo said the offering would work alongside its V-Live streaming video service.
Over the past several years RealNetworks has signed deals with a variety of carriers for its Helix technology.
The technology allows content providers that are already using RealNetworks’ technology to modify streaming content for mobile phone users.
Terms of DoCoMo’s deal with RealNetworks were not disclosed.
