The wireless division of AT&T, Cingular Wireless, recently completed its efforts in upgrading and
expanding its mobile service capabilities with the addition of 560 new mobile sites in the L.A. area.
Cingular's network enhancements were part of the company’s $6 billion capital expenditure program.
The $1.3 billion figure was spent over a two-year time frame and amounted to nearly $660 million per year,
or 10 percent of the company’s investment made last year.
Cingular Wireless put up 257 new cell sites last year, and a total of 560 over the 2-year period, equaling
about five new mobile sites a week.
The majority of the service upgrades took place in Metropolitan Los Angeles, Orange County around South
Coast Plaza, Pismo Beach along the coast highways and the Inland Empire from Temecula to Hesperia.
Andy Shibley, v.p. and general manager for the company's Greater L.A. market, said, “now as part of AT&T,
we will continue our momentum and focus on delivering a strong network in 2007."
Cingular’s Allover network covers approximately 273 million people, or about 91 percent of the U.S. population.
