Thousands of Nokia employees at two separate facilities staged a walkout contesting the company’s plans
to lay off about 700 employees.
According to Susanna Konttinen, representative for the Union of Salaried Employees, up to 8,500 office
staff were reportedly set to stop working at 2 p.m. local time at the Finland-based Tampere and Oulu offices.
The strike was to last the remainder of Friday afternoon.
Just last week Nokia announced that it was reorganizing some of its operations and the 700 potential job
cuts included approximately 340 in Finland.
Additionally, some marketing, sales, IT and R&D positions might be moved closer to their respective markets.
Nokia was informed of the action in advance, but it would not comment on how many personnel were involved.
