Siemens Communications has launched a new fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) solution with a decidedly
enterprise focus.
And the company says carriers should also be interested in the new product.
Announced by Siemens yesterday, the new HiPath MobileConnect product is aimed specifically at
bringing Wi-Fi/GSM convergence to enterprises.
Luc Roy, v.p. of product planning says Siemens's HiPath MobileConnect will let enterprises
roll out a dual-mode solution using their IP-PBX and WLAN.
However, Roy said carriers also may be interested in offering HiPath MobileConnect as a managed
services offering.
Siemens is currently talking to some carriers about the product, he added.
Siemens' HiPath MobileConnect, which provides presence through SIP technology, includes a hardware-software
component that links the PBX and WLAN, and then routes calls automatically.
There also is software on the handset to provide access through the PBX. When a user leaves WLAN
coverage, the calls are automatically routed through the mobile network.
The company has certified two handsets to work with HiPath MobileConnect so far; the Nokia E-60 and
Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket LOOX.
Siemens plans to have several more models before the product is officially available in April 2007.
