There is some noise that's building around the expected release of a new Toshiba smartphone at Mobile
World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
The Internet has been literally flooded with video clips and photo reviews of Toshiba’s new TG-01 smartphone,
which uses Qualcomm’s SnapDragon wireless network architecture.
Some wireless analysts are now saying that the smartphone could be a serious competitor for the iPhone and
the HTC Touch.
The new Toshiba TG-01 is the mobile industry's first Qualcomm SnapDragon device.
The wireless handset is only 9.9 mm thick, but boasts a 4.1-inch W-VGA touchscreen, GPS, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, a Micro-SD
slot and an overlay on the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system that gives it a unique-looking user interface.
So far, preliminary reviews have been positive and new reviews are being made as you read this.
Almost every smartphone device is measured against the reigning Apple iPhone 3G. While the TG-01 features
faster CPU speeds and a thinner shell than the iPhone, Apple’s apparently seamless user interface seems to be
the main strong point to beat.
Overall, smartphones are one of the few sectors of the wireless market that have enjoyed relatively strong
sales amid a deteriorating macroeconomic environment, especially since Oct. 2008.
For its part, AT&T recently reported 1.9 million iPhone 3-G activations in the fourth quarter of 2008.
Sales numbers from Verizon and Sprint are expected around March 3rd.
