Feb. 6, 2009

Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has said it is launching its Flexi Multiradio Base Station.

NSN's new technology covers GSM/EDGE, W-CDMA/HSPA and LTE in a single unit.

NSN's new "Flexi" architecture was sort of a novel when it came out in 2006, moving from the big products to one that is more compact and better for the environment, explained Dhruv Khanna, head of NSN’s radio access business for North America.

Khanna said that the new multiradio product takes that innovation one notch higher and consumes about the same amount of power as a household appliance, say like a typical television set.

Running multiple technologies in a single base station means reduced operating expenses for operators due to fewer site visits and reduced maintenance.

Khanna added that the goal is to begin deployment of the multiradio base stations next year.

Nokia Siemens Networks currently offers a Flexi base station for Wi-MAX technology as well.
