Camera phones largely increasing in number

January 31, 2005

New numbers from InfoTrends/CAP Ventures suggest that, as prices get reduced for camera phones and people find them easy and simple to use, ownership rates have jumped significantly.

The percentage of Internet users who own a camera phone rose significantly between 2003 and 2004.

Only 3% of Internet users owned a mobile phone in 2003, compared to 20% in 2004, according to InfoTrends.

Camera phone ownership is likely to increase in 2005, as 27% of consumers surveyed say they are highly interested in having a camera in the next mobile phone they purchase.

The next stage of camera phone buying will be driven by advances in technology, according to InfoTrends Consultant Jill Aldort: "The introduction of several new megapixel handsets in 2005 will set off the next big wave of buying.

And higher resolutions will drive more printing from camera phones, which is good news for printing vendors."

About 40% of camera phone owners have made prints of pictures taken with their camera phone.

This percentage could be higher, based on the findings of a survey by Greenfield Online and commissioned by Snapfish: they find that only 22% of camera phone owners print their photos, but that 73% want to do so, suggesting that many do not know how.

The Snapfish study reveals some interesting demographic information about camera phone owners. For example, people with children take 49% more photos with their camera phone than people without, and are also more interested in printing their photos.

Children are also the most popular subject, and "home" is the most popular location, for photos taken with a camera phone.

Women are a bit more likely to use their camera phones to take pictures than men, with 79% of females taking pictures with their camera phones, compared to just 68% of males.

As for the future, an amazing 56% of respondents think that camera phones will replace film and digital camera in the next 10 to 20 years. A bold prediction, but an indication of the popularity of the devices among camera phone owners.
