According to a new study released by the MDA (Mobile Data Association), the total number of
text messages in the U.K. broke the four billion barrier last month for the first time.
The SMS (short message service) total for December 2006 was 4.3 billion in the U.K. alone.
Before that, the highest ever-recorded SMS total for one month in the United Kingdom was 3.8 billion,
recorded in both October and November of last year.
Overall, the total for all of last year was 41.8 billion text messages, a daily average of about
114 million text messages.
When compared to the mere 42 million messages sent per day five years ago through December 2001, it
is clear how far England has come in embracing text messaging technology, which has emerged from a popular
craze to becoming an essential communications tool, and inclusive to all age groups.
The MDA forecasts that the number of text messages will continue to increase, totaling 45 billion this year,
with an average of 3.75 billion messages sent each month and 123 million messages every day.
