Following up on its recent announcement to allow external devices, programs and services on its network,
Verizon Wireless said it will host a developer conference March 19 and 20 in New York.
Verizon hopes to see an unspecified new revenue stream by letting its network be used for technologies
beyond just telephony.
Sample applications could include digital cameras, industrial equipment, office appliances and security
cameras, a representative explained - along with other technologies not yet imagined.
The new network option should be open for business in the second half of 2008.
Details and information about the Open Development Conference are expected at

The company also announced that it may be possible for carriers in Asia and elsewhere to make communications devices that work on
Verizon's network when customers travel to the United States, without the foreign carrier having to become
an official Verizon partner.
In addition to technical subjects, sessions at the conference will cover legal and regulatory issues,
officials said.
