AT and T said that it will start selling the Apple iPhone 3G in the state of Vermont beginning January 15.
The U.S.’s second-largest wireless carrier previously lacked spectrum and stores in the northern New England state,
and the move is aimed at changing that.
In December, AT&T was able to put its name up on ten former Unicel stores, spokeswoman Kate MacKinnon said.
Overall, AT&T's 3G coverage expands nationwide except for Arkansas, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.
In those areas, Apple's iPhone 3G simply reverts to 2G connections.
In other news, Verizon Wireless just announced its own network expansion this week, also in Vermont.
Mobile antenna sites are being added in areas near ski resorts in Stoke, Killington and Stratton Mountain.
Competition in the wireless segment is in deed heating up in Vermont. Some analysts now expect Sprint Nextel
and others to follow suit.
