Skyhook Wireless, a provider of Wi-Fi Positioning System solutions has upgraded its publicly available Skyhook SDK (software development kit) to include Android operating system support, as well as simpler deployment models.

Skyhook says wireless and mobile service developers can now offer iPhone-quality GPS services in location-aware Android applications.

Brady Becker, co-founder of the social networking application BrightKite says “I have investigated the new Skyhook Wireless SDK and look forward to integrating it into the Android version of our application.”

“I am thrilled that we can offer our Android users the same reliable, fast and accurate location performance that they have come to expect on the iPhone," added Becker.

By adding hybrid GPS technology to the SDK, Skyhook says it can now offer reliable GPS location results to wireless users in all environments.

Ted Morgan, CEO of Skyhook Wireless said “mobile phone users today expect location-aware applications to work everywhere they travel. By simply enhancing our Wi-Fi Positioning functionality with mobile tower triangulation and GPS support, Skyhook Wireless can now offer mobile developers the opportunity to provide rapid and accurate GPS location results that meet industry standards.”

Mobile developers can license the Skyhook SDK on a per unit and per user basis. Ad revenue share models are also available in conjunction with Skyhook's advertising partners.

The upgraded software development kit is about 74 percent smaller than previous versions, designed for deployment in mobile applications and MIDs (mobile Internet devices) with critical size constraints.

Additionally, Symbian enhancements now include support for the PSY interface on the S-60 model. On Windows Mobile, Skyhook Wireless now supports the GPS Intermediate Driver.

Skyhook says that it has also added a feature that automatically enables Wi-Fi, improving the user experience by saving battery life and further reducing user interaction with the GPS location functionality.
