IBM and Research in Motion (RIM) unveiled some new Lotus collaboration software and developer tools for RIM's BlackBerry platform.

The initiative is aimed at bringing collective intelligence to BlackBerry smartphones and RIM mobile devices.

Bob Picciano, general manager of IBM Lotus Software sais “IBM's new Lotus collaboration features and BlackBerry developer tools will deliver productivity beyond the office, extending IBM software and its many IT services so that enterprises can access all of the resources they need to keep business moving anytime and anywhere.”

Also, IBM Lotus Notes/Domino and IBM Lotus/Sametime unified communications and collaboration software, which have worked on most BlackBerry devices for several years are now also compatible with RIM's new BlackBerry Storm smartphone.

The two companies recently made a new presence and awareness-everywhere feature available on the BlackBerry Storm.

These improvements signal another strategic move by RIM's BlackBerry platform as the competition of ultra-functional smartphones intensifies more and more since Q3 2008.

IBM's new software and RIM's new BlackBerry developer tools include mobile access to Lotus symphony documents and wireless access to Lotus Quickr Web 2.0 software.

They also include enhanced IBM Lotus Notes connections functionality for access to activities, Internet blogs and social networking communities in order to increase the access already available to user profiles in the business community.
