Sprint's Boost Mobile division will soon start offering its $50 Monthly Unlimited Prepaid Plan on Sprint's
CDMA network beginning Jan. 13.
Sprint also said that it will add its first smartphone to its line-up as well.
Historically, Boost offered Motorola handsets compatible with iDEN, and Motorola was its exclusive handset
supplier.
With today's announcement however, the company is now broadening its line-up to include not only a BlackBerry
but also two Kyocera Sanyo models: the Incognito and the Mirro smartphone.
Boost did a trial yesterday of an unlimited CDMA offer in a few select markets before its unlimited iDEN
offer was introduced, but that offer still had taxes and fees and wasn't as simple as the $50 offer.
Boost Mobile now says $50 is $50 – and no other taxes or fees are added to the bill.
The BlackBerry Curve 8330 from Research In Motion will be available on a new $60 monthly unlimited plan.
The Curve sells for $249. The Sanyo Mirro is priced at $99 and the Incognito is $149 with a $20 rebate.
Last year, Boost introduced the $50 per month unlimited talk, text, Web and walkie-talkie plan on the iDEN
network.
Sprint says that offer drew more than 2 million new customers last year. In the third quarter, Boost says
it attracted more prepaid net customer additions than MetroPCS, Leap, T-Mobile prepaid, AT&T prepaid and Verizon
prepaid combined.
Overall, and up until today, the prepaid segment of the wireless market has been very popular and many think
it will continue to be. Some mobile users simply don't like to be 'tied' to a fixed 2 or 3-year contract and
prepaid makes more sense to them.
They also like the flexibility that prepaid offers them if they want to replace or upgrade their phone or
smartphone to something else.
