ICANN, the body that controls the issuance of new Internet Top-Level Domains
(TLDs), has approved the addition of a new .mobi domain to be used along side
of .com, .net, and all of the others already in use.
The new .mobi domain is to be used exclusively for sites that were created with the small displays and limited input methods associated with mobile phones and other portable devices.

The new top level domain was approved earlier today.
Companies will be able to register .mobi domains in the first half of 2006. Companies with existing domains will be given the chance to register their associated .mobi domains first before others will be given access to them.
Considering that the term mobile, which "mobi" is short for, is not used in many languages, it remains to be seen if this TLD gets any real support.
