A distinct group of mobile operators have proposed a new initiative to better standardize MAIs (mobile
application interfaces) and ensure more secure wireless services.
Known as BONDI, the program is supported by OMTP members AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Telenor, Telefonica,
3 Group, Telecom Italia and Vodafone.
The initiative members hope that BONDI will provide a consistent, more secure Web services interface that can be used
by developers across device platforms, minimizing the potential for technology fragmentation.
“Putting a stop on fragmentation, this new program will encourage more developers to create unique,
exciting applications for mobile Web 2.0. In turn, this will improve the mobile broadband proposition
and greatly enhance the customer experience,” said Arnd Gallmann, senior v.p. of Terminal Technology at
T-Mobile International.
He added "this new initiative will work to expose key handset features to Web developers to help
them develop more function-rich, user friendly and relevant applications, while at the same time protecting
against the treat of fraudulent and malicious activity."
“With so many diverse mobile devices and operating systems available in today's marketplace, it can be
challenging to roll out consistent and compelling new services across a broad spread."
He added "BONDI addresses the
need to deliver great services across multiple platforms, whilst ensuring that customers are protected
from any risk associated with adopting a more open approach to these systems,” said Reinhard Kreft,
Vodafone's head of Standardization and Industry Engagements.
