A new IMS Research survey projects that touchscreen-equipped cell phone handsets have been gaining in popularity
since the first iPhone appeared on the mobile phone scene.
Although there were fewer than 30 million touchscreen phones sold last year, IMS Research say that number
could easily rise to more than 230 million in three to four years from now.
IMS attributes this growth to success and future plans by various handset makers.
Reports and some announcements from the top mobile phone manufacturers suggest that touchscreen
devices are here to stay.
A few weeks ago, LG revealed that it had sold 7 million touchscreen handsets.
The announcement came just five quarters after LG launched its first touchscreen device.
Not standing by the sidelines, Samsung and Sprint released the Instinct, a full touchscreen handset on May 31.
Just one week after the launch, Sprint announced that the Instinct had become the best-selling EV-DO device in
the wireless carrier’s history.
Apple also reported selling 1 million of the new 3G iPhone handsets during the first weekend of sales.
