The 5.4 earthquake that shook Los Angeles on Monday didn’t damage any mobile sites or towers.
However, mobile circuits and cell phone networks became so busy that they were unable to process all call
requests.
Overall, Sprint’s network experienced a 800 percent call spike. This was judged as very serious.
For its part, Verizon Wireless also experienced unprecedented call volumes, more than it would normally
expect in association with a similar emergency event.
Wireless networks weren’t the only ones overwhelmed. Even landline users had many problems as well.
Many phone customers reported busy signals 90 percent of the time, or no dial tone at all.
Call volumes returned to normal by mid-afternoon, but the FCC said it was investigating where the
problems came from.
