AT&T is now offering the new Nokia Surge handset (dubbed a social smartphone) for social networking.
Without elaborating, AT&T said it will sell the Nokia Surge at a "modest price".
AT&T said the Nokia Surge is designed for mobile users who like to stay connected whether using instant
messaging, text or e-mail, multimedia messaging, AT&T Video Sharing, or simply updating and connecting via
their favorite social networks.
About two weeks ago, AT&T had hinted that the Surge would probably be offered in the third week of July,
but didn't give any specific date.
Nokia wants to improve its North American presence by working closely with wireless carriers like AT&T and
Verizon Wireless.
In April, AT&T made ad campaign highlighting its smartphone offerings. The mobile carrier announced
smartphones that then expanded its line-up to seven.
David Petts, v.p. and manager of the AT&T account for Nokia said “together with AT&T, we are addressing the
increased demand for smartphones with a device that’s as attractive to the customer as it is to his or her
wallet.”
The Symbian S60-based Surge includes Flash support to view most sites in full HTML. It also comes with a
pre-installed JuiceCaster application so users can post messages, images, videos and comments to Web sites like
Facebook.
Other features include a 2-megapixel camera, AT&T Navigator and AT&T Mobile Music.
The wireless phone sells for $79.99 with a 2-year contract and after a mail-in rebate.
It will be available online and in AT&T stores this Sunday.
