Europe's regulatory body is backing Nokia's DVB-H mobile TV standard.
The decision isn't final yet, but the EU's backing further strengthens DVB-H's position in international markets.
Although some nations are opting for a multi-standard approach, Europe said it prefers a single standard.
E.C. telecommunications regulator Viviane Reding said "I know that competition among different standards can be
the right way to let the market identify the best solution, but we have been waiting too long now. The
opportunities are slipping away. It is time to break the deadlock."
Nokia's technology also has strong support in the United States, but not everyone is pleased with the decision.
For its part, Qualcomm has been promoting its MediaFlo mobile TV technology, and South Korea has also lobbied
the E.U. commission to consider its T-DMB standard.
Patent holders for T-DMB include Samsung and the BBC.
The European Commission said it plans to add DVB-H to its published list of standards in about three weeks
from now.
