Canadian-based technology and licensing firm Wi-LAN has filed a patent lawsuit against Motorola, Research
in Motion and UT Star in the U.S. District Court.
The patent suit claims that these companies’ mobile handheld devices and other equipment infringe
on two of Wi-LAN's U.S. patents, and it now wants retribution.
For its part, Wi-Lan also said that it settled a patent dispute with Marvell Semiconductor in the U.S.
District Court for the Northern District of California.
Wi-LAN says that lawyer firm McKool Smith will represent it in this lawsuit.
The firm is also representing Wi-LAN in two separate actions filed on Oct. 31, 2007, in the U.S.
District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
Founded sixteen years ago, Wi-LAN says it has licensed intellectual property to over one-hundred companies
and has a portfolio of patented inventions in a broad range of electronics and communications products.
