Predictive text input: yes, it's here now

LG Electronics says it has expanded its relationship with Nuance Communications to deliver its T-9 and XT-9 predictive text input devices across LG’s portfolio of mobile phones and MIDs (mobile Internet devices).

Nuance is a provider of speech and imaging solutions for businesses and consumers. Its technology tries to transform the way people interact with information and how they create, share and use documents.

Nuance's predictive text software supports a variety of applications to make it faster and easier for LG consumers to send text messages and emails, as well as quickly type URLs via any keypad format, including standard and touchscreen 12-key and Qwerty keypads.

The two companies say LG also will be taking greater advantage of Nuance’s extensive language support.

Currently, over 80 languages and dialects worldwide including Chinese PTI (Phrasal Text Input) and SBI (Sentence Based Input), and Indic languages such as Hinglish, enabling LG to expand its predictive text offering into the mobile markets of China and India.

Other handsets that use Nuance’s T-9 and XT-9 include Samsung’s Behold, Blackjack, Instinct and Memoir.

The Nokia E71 also uses XT9.

On Nuance's website, the company claims it has the world's largest portfolio of speech and imaging products backed by the expertise of its professional services organization.

Our company made significant progress in operating margins and the growth of recurring revenue streams,” said Paul Ricci, chairman and CEO of Nuance.
