T-Mobile USA has confirmed it will offer its new G1 wireless handset in August.
The mobile carrier said that to this date, it has sold more than 1 million G1 handsets, spurred by new software
updates, such as Android 1.5 and other new wireless applications.
About 4,900 applications are now available for download from the Android Store.
Google’s Android operating system appears to be rapidly gaining momentum, even though many wireless industry
observers expected far more models would have been released by now.
A whole slew of new devices was expected at trade shows, like CTIA’s in April, but that didn’t happen.
Tuesday, Acer said it will deliver netbooks with the Android operating system instead of Windows.
In other mobile device news, Nokia announced today the highly anticipated Nokia N-97 will begin selling
later in June in more than 75 countries. The Nokia N-97 is the first device to ship with the Ovi Store.
The new handset isn’t tied to a carrier in the U.S. (at least not yet) so it is expected to sell unsubsidized
for about $699.
The new N-97 also is Nokia's first device to feature a personalizable home screen, which can be customized
with widgets.
The widgets include key social networking destinations like Facebook and Hi-5, news services like the
Associated Press, Bloomberg and Reuters, as well as various shopping and weather information.
