T-Mobile USA announces the upcoming availability of its T-Mobile MyTouch 3G handset, the highly anticipated follow-up to the T-Mobile G1 Android-based mobile phone.

T-Mobile's new myTouch 3G boasts new features and a touch-screen display with virtual keyboard.

The new MyTouch 3G Android handset will be available in three colors: black, white and a distinctive merlot and T-Mobile customers can pre-order the device beginning July 8 for $199.99 with a two-year contract.

Designed by HTC, the new mobile handset features a 3.2-inch HVGA touch-screen display and virtual keyboard, a 3.2-megapixel camera, a music player with a pre-installed 4 Gb Micro SD memory card and WiFi connectivity.

The MyTouch 3G is just one in a line of high-profile device launches happening this Summer. Sprint and Palm kicked things off with the launch of the Palm Pre on June 6, followed closely by Apple’s launch of the iPhone 3G S on June 19.

The Pre, 3G S and the myTouch 3G are all closely watched launches, as each run unique high-profile operating systems with built-in fanbases and developer communities.

Each of the new phones comes linked to devoted mobile application stores.

The myTouch 3G will link to the Android Marketplace which T-mobile and currently features “thousands of applications.”

Highlighting app stores as a way of selling devices has become a necessity in today’s competitive smartphone market.

The new MyTouch is no exception, leaning heavily on application development and personalization, T-Mobile is billing its new Android phone as “featuring personalization front and center.”

The new Android handset comes equipped with Sherpa, a personalization application created by Geodelic.

The new application runs the Geodelic Engine for Interest Evaluation (GENIE), a learning engine that automatically customizes itself to the user’s preferences.

Through behavior and user feedback, the application supposedly learns a person’s likes and dislikes, prioritizing recommended retailers, restaurants and attractions.
