In a joint effort at reducing the staggering number of various mobile phone chargers on the market today,
EU officials say they have concluded an agreement with wireless phone makers to introduce a new single,
more energy efficient charger and that can be used on data-enabled handsets.
EU industry commissioner Guenter Verheugen says offering a single, standard charger will reduce costs
to manufacturers and reduce the number of chargers thrown away when consumers buy new cell phones and other
MIDs (mobile Internet devices).
Verheugen added that he wants to see the common charger expand to include other older phones, cameras and
laptops in the years ahead.
Under yesterday's accord, mobile handset makers Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Apple, Motorola, Research In Motion and
others will introduce the single charger by March 2010.
Wireless industry observers all see this as a positive development for the market as a whole and are now
looking forward to other similar initiatives.
