Sprint Nextel has selected Nokia to deploy its WiMAX network in four Texas markets.

The cities involved include Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio.

With wireless service expected to begin in the first half of next year, Nokia will deploy WiMAX networks based on its Flexi Wi-MAX base station in the four affected markets.

Sprint will then use its WiMAX network to provide wireless Internet broadband access to businesses, consumers and the government.

Unlike typical base station equipment, the Flexi Base Station is the size of a small suitcase rather than the size of a refrigerator.

Overall, Nokia and Sprint are depending on the base station’s tiny size and higher power efficiency to cut the costs of deploying its new network.

In February, Sprint announced that Samsung will provide it with WiMAX networking equipment in its Washington, D.C. and Baltimore markets.
