Ericsson said yesterday it will utilize the EDGE Evolution standard to significantly increase current GSM network speeds up to 1 Mbps.

Overall, Ericsson is committed to prepare its software upgrade by January 2009.

Wireless industry experts say EDGE Evolution is an improvement in data performance over GSM networks and will increase speeds up to 300percent.

Additionally, the technology improves coverage and spectrum efficiency, while reducing overall latency.

With today's growing demand for high bandwidth mobile networks, this enhancement for GSM/EDGE networks will complement WCDMA/HSPA networks, said Ericsson.

“Our EDGE Evolution builds on 3GPP's industry standardization of agreed technology improvements and reflects the current trend toward EDGE-capable GSM networks and terminals,” said Ulf Ewaldsson, v.p. marketing at Ericsson.
