Sprint's CEO Dan Hesse said today it was still in talks with ClearWire about a Wi-MAX partnership and that it was
hoping to release dual-mode CDMA/WiMAX devices by the end of 2008.
Hesse also added that returning the carrier’s core mobile phone business to profitability was his first priority.
However, Hesse was quick to point out that he was very encouraged with how the company’s WiMAX launch was going.
“Our soft launches in Baltimore, Washington and in the Chicago area offers confidence in the performance of Wi-MAX
technology,” said Hesse in a conference call with industry analysts.
Hesse also said that although Sprint terminated its agreement with Clearwire almost four months ago,
since then the wireless carrier has had wide-ranging discussions with the Wi-MAX provider on potential
relationships, but no final agreements have been reached.”
Although he added that, “later this year we plan to introduce dual-mode CDMA WiMAX devices that will greatly
accelerate the customer experience, we also have a very clear view of how we intend to be different.”
Hesse closed in saying that Sprint plans to talk more about WiMAX in mid-April.
