Globally, Nokia says it will lay off 1,700 workers at its plants as the company continues to face rapidly
diminishing demand for its handsets and mobile products.
The jobs cuts will come mostly in sales, marketing and technology management.
The decision is part of Nokia’s previously announced plan to streamline operations back in November 2008.
Nokia said it would cut costs it its handset unit by $909.3 million in light of falling demand. Last month,
the company laid off 1,000 employees through voluntary departures.
Nokia employs about 130,000 people worldwide.
On Mar. 9, research firm Gartner said Nokia maintained its number one position, but in the fourth quarter of
last year, its smartphone sales declined by almost 17 percent year-on-year.
