Yesterday, Microsoft said that globally, it plans to double the number of Windows Mobile software licenses it sells to
well over 20 million for next year.
This would greatly increase competition for RIM (Research in Motion) and Symbian.
Microsoft also added that it is gaining market share and expects that trend to continue for at least the
next three years.
Peter Knook, Microsoft's senior v.p. for mobile communications said "this will be the fourth year that we
have doubled our size and we are significantly outgrowing the market as well as our competition. RIM and Symbian
aren't doing this and we're gaining market share and growing our portfolio."
Knook added the recent RIM BlackBerry service outage could help Microsoft's
move to grow its enterprise customer base.
"It reinforces the fact that there's a single point of failure in RIM's infrastructure and it's provoking a
lot of companies to look at the alternatives," Knook said.
Currently, HTC manufactures most of the phones with Windows Mobile, but Microsoft also said that it plans to
expand the variety of handsets that use its software.
