Yesterday, T-Mobile USA announced that it has finally launched 3G speeds in New York City.
The country’s fourth largest wireless carrier said it plans to extend its new 3-G service to as many
as 20 to 25 major U.S. markets throughout 2008.
The news follows many months of anticipation and some industry observers were pleased with the announcement.
Overall, T-Mobile now has four UMTS-compatible handsets available currently, including Nokia's 3555 and
6263 and Samsung's T-819 and T-639.
The wireless carrier said it will continue to release compatible handsets through the year.
T-Mobile is the last of the top four carriers to roll out 3G services.
Its network is based on UMTS technology and promises download speeds of up to 300 kbps.
T-Mobile USA said it plans to release HSDPA handsets during the third quarter. HSDPA promises download speeds
of up to 600 kbps.
