Late Friday, Qualcomm announced that it has acquired 40 MHz of L-Band radio spectrum recently auctioned by
U.K. regulator Ofcom for $16.2 million.
The company plans to collaborate with partners to bring a variety of wireless technologies to the U.K. market.
John Caterer, managing director for Qualcomm Europe said “winning this license creates an opportunity for
Qualcomm to explore emerging business models and advanced mobile technologies.”
He added “if we can help the market harness this potential, we will see additional opportunities for service
providers using a variety of technologies. This will ultimately benefit consumers, offering them high quality
services and a range of creative applications.”
The L-Band spectrum license acquired by Qualcomm covers the United Kingdom completely, and is technology neutral.
This will allow Qualcomm to use the spectrum for whatever it sees fit based on its assessment of market needs.
The auction was held two weeks ago, and Qualcomm will be able to use its license immediately.
The spectrum license is tradable, the company added.
